Since 1998, Prof. Dr. Nikolay Kolchanov (Institute of Cytology and Genetics (SB RAS), Novosibirsk) and Prof. Dr. Ralf Hofestädt (Bielefeld University) have been organizing bilateral and international summer schools, workshops and conferences (notably, the biannual conference, Bioinformatics of Genome Regulation and Structure in Novosibirsk since 1998). Based on this cooperation, the German/Russian Network of Computational Systems Biology was established in 2005. The network has been organized to facilitate collaborative investigation and education in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology between German and Russian researchers. The interlinking research topic was Analysis and simulation of biomolecular systems and processes. The main goal of this cooperation was knowledge-transfer and the initiation of bilateral projects. Furthermore, this network has provided a platform for educational programs, exchange of young researchers, e-learning, seminars, workshops and summer school programs.

With China's sky-rocketing economic growth since the late 1980's, the mobility of its labor force has increased tremendously. In the early 21st century the number of internal migrants is approaching 300 million, corresponding to more than 20% of the country's population. This development has become a cause for political concern, highlighting significant issues in the social relations between settled communities and new migrants. This book examines in depth how institutional arrangements, in particular, the Hukou (Household Registration) system, influence the integration of migrants at their destinations. Under this unique Chinese settlement system, migrants are defined by their Hukou location to which they are allocated by birth or by later official permissions if they fulfill certain requirements. The primary research questions approached concern the economic, social, political and psychological integration of migrants in cities. They are answered on the basis of both quantitative and qualitative original primary data. The findings are impressive. Migrants show strong performances with regard to their integration into labor markets and their income levels. Nevertheless, they display significantly weaker performances in the area of social integration and political integration. Surprisingly no difference in integration at the psychological level could be found.Dr. Rumin LUO (PhD from Bielefeld University, Germany, 2012) is working as a research fellow in Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Germany since 2012. She was trained as an Economic Sociologist and her current research interests are focused on institution, social policy, migration, and culture and market in urban China. Her other works appeared on Urbanities Journal, Collections of Women Studies and InterDisciplines. Journal of History and Sociology. The German Congress on Crime Prevention (GCOCP) is an annual event that takes place since 1995 in different German cities and targets all areas of crime prevention. Since its foundation the GCOCP has been open to an international audience with a growing number of non-German speaking participants joining. To give the international guests their own discussion forum, the Annual International Forum (AIF) within the GCOCP was established in 2007. For international guests this event offers lectures in English language as well as other activities within the GCOCP that are translated simultaneously. This book reflects the outcomes of the 7th AIF (22. and 23. April 2013 in Bielefeld). The articles show worldwide views on crime prevention and criminal policy as well as the current status, discussion, research and projects in crime prevention from different countries.

Modular Structures in Design and Architecture

This book examines morphogenetic processes based on a combination of digital and analogue modeling and manufacturing techniques. Traditional physical modelling techniques were combined with digital 3d modelling and manufacturing technologies, informing the emerging constructs with additional components. These modules can in many cases be translated into architectural designs. They operate as precursors of architecture to come. These visual studies have been produced in the academic context of the Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany). The produced output proves not only to be an exciting new way in educational motivation and systematic architectural approach, but also serves as an important step of intruducing (future) architects into the understanding and handling of complex geometries and novel CAD / CAM technologies. Asterios Agkathidis studied architecture in the AU Thessaloniki and the RWTH Aachen, completing his postgraduate studies in Advanced Architectural Design at the Staedelschule Architecture Class (Frankfurt). He became a partner at b&k+ (Cologne), then worked for VMX architects (Amsterdam). He later founded the architecture and research laboratory a3lab Frankfurt-Thessaloniki and has been planning and realizing projects around the world since then. His work has been published, awarded and exhibited widely. His teaching and lecturing experiences include AdbK Nuremberg, TU Darmstadt, AU Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia, Columbia University and the Staedelschule Architecture Class. He was visiting assistant professor at the Lebanese American University and senior lecturer at Raffles Design Institute Shanghai. Today he holds a Lectureship for Digital Design at the University of Liverpool.

Digital Manufacturing

This book examines the possibilities emerging for design and architecture by the influence of novel computer aided design and digital manufacturing tools and techniques. The studies shown here are focusing in the realisation of the digitally conceived structures into 1/1 physical prototypes. Thus, an index of insights concerning manufacturing techniques in association with structure, material, detailing and design arose. The used structural techniques are divided in five categories, which are emphasized trough out the books formation: cross segmentation, accumulation, frameworks, loops and foldings. Generative CAD tools, algorithms and scripting applications where not only used as design components, but also as devices which helped to rationalise and systematize the production process of complex geometries. Crowdfunding as a Financing Tool for NGO Projec...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,7, University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld (Wirtschaft und Gesundheit), language: English, abstract: Crowdfunding platforms give space to private persons and organizations to publish their projects online and ask for financial support. These projects can be either for profit or non-profit. Although data can, once put online, go viral in no time and become known to many people, there is still much effort needed to create an outstanding project which provides added value to the donor and is thus worth supporting and sharing. By far not every crowdfunding project is successful, and many fundraisers do not yet have the know-how to reach enough funders for their projects. Others even neglect to engage in crowdfunding in the first place, as new possibilities always come along with confusion and insecurity. The central aim of this thesis is therefore to examine how web-based crowdfunding projects must be designed and presented in order to satisfy prospective donors' needs. The main focus lays on the initiation of the funding process. Prospects shall be convinced to become contributors to a crowdfunding campaign in a sustainable, long-term oriented manner. In order to come to the right conclusions, it is necessary to analyze both the fundraisers' and the funders' point of view. First of all, it needs to be clarified how crowdfunding works and what possibilities there are for German fundraisers to realize their campaigns in the most satisfactory manner. Several donation-based crowdfunding platforms in Germany offer different tools and features for their users, being both fundraisers and funders. Furthermore, it will be defined who must be addressed by crowdfunding campaigns and whether these people differ from regular offline donors. To become more specific, the German donors and their preferences in giving will be investigated, concerning both offline and online fundraising. For a more profound analysis of the donors' insights, one has to go back to the very roots of charity and philanthropy: What motivates people to donate to charity? Both the funders' characteristics and the fundraisers' possibilities will be brought together when elaborating the incentives to contribute to a crowdfunding campaign. The design and content of the project page as well as the features of the crowdfunding platform should match the basic motives for becoming a donor. Some of the features already being offered by the platforms fulfill this precondition. In addition, there is potential for new tools making a contribution more probable and assuring long-term relationships to donors.
