With China's sky-rocketing economic growth since the late 1980's, the mobility of its labor force has increased tremendously. In the early 21st century the number of internal migrants is approaching 300 million, corresponding to more than 20% of the country's population. This development has become a cause for political concern, highlighting significant issues in the social relations between settled communities and new migrants. This book examines in depth how institutional arrangements, in particular, the Hukou (Household Registration) system, influence the integration of migrants at their destinations. Under this unique Chinese settlement system, migrants are defined by their Hukou location to which they are allocated by birth or by later official permissions if they fulfill certain requirements. The primary research questions approached concern the economic, social, political and psychological integration of migrants in cities. They are answered on the basis of both quantitative and qualitative original primary data. The findings are impressive. Migrants show strong performances with regard to their integration into labor markets and their income levels. Nevertheless, they display significantly weaker performances in the area of social integration and political integration. Surprisingly no difference in integration at the psychological level could be found.Dr. Rumin LUO (PhD from Bielefeld University, Germany, 2012) is working as a research fellow in Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Germany since 2012. Experiment and Exploration: Forms of World-Disc...

This book deals with contemporary epistemological questions, connecting Educational Philosophy with the field of Science- and Technology Studies. It can be understood as a draft of a general theory of world-disclosure, which is in its core a distinction between two forms of world-disclosure: experiment and exploration. These two forms have never been clearly distinguished before. The focus lies on the experimental form of world-disclosure, which is described in detail and in contrast to the explorational form along the line of twenty-one characteristics, which are mainly derived from empirical studies of experimental work in the field of natural sciences. It can also be understood as an attempt to integrate elements of the Anglo-Saxon Philosophy of Science with elements of the German tradition of Educational Philosophy. This is also reflected in the style of writing. In accordance to the content-level of the book, the argument for experimental forms of world-disclosure is written in an essayistic, readable style, which can be understood as an experimental form of writing. This book is a translation of the doctoral thesis 'Experiment und Exploration. Bildung als experimentelle Form der Welterschließung' (summa cum laude). The thesis was published in German in 2010 by Transcript (Bielefeld) in the series called 'Theorie Bilden', edited by Prof. Dr. Hannelore Faulstich-Wieland, Prof. Dr. Hans-Christoph Koller, Prof. Dr. Karl-Josef Pazzini and Prof. Dr. Michael Wimmer.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Bielefeld University (Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft), course: A Survey of British Literature, language: English, abstract: The South African J.M. Coetzee's novel Foe, written in 1986, serves as an example of how established narrative conventions can be altered and twisted by adopting elements from different narrative approaches, which are combined into an interesting, unique and well-rounded novel. In this term paper I would like to analyse the unconventional way in which the many stories of Coetzee's Foe are told. I will begin by closely examining the narrative situation, which - although it might appear so during the first reading - does not stay constant throughout the novel's discourse. In the second part of my analysis, I will concentrate on the level of the characters and the story, in which both a variety of stories are told as well as the perspectives are alternated perpetually. Finally, I will have a look at what I would call one of the novel's major storylines - the story about story telling itself. This 'meta-storytelling' (or 'meta-narration') is what binds all elements of Foe together to one cohesive piece of literature.

There is a special edition for North-Rhine Westphalia, which differs slightly from the federal version. When English became an official subject in 2003 and the first provisional guidelines had been published, the State Government decided to use Playway only after a few changes would have been made. However, this paper is concerned with the federal edition, which was published in 2001 and is still used in many schools.

Wiley-Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization Advisory Editors Ronald L. Graham Jan Karel Lenstra Robert E. Tarjan Discrete Mathematics and Optimization involves the study of finite structures. It is one of the fastest growing areas in mathematics today. The level and depth of recent advances in the area and the wide applicability of its evolving techniques point to the rapidity with which the field is moving from its beginnings to maturity and presage the ever-increasing interaction between it and computer science. The Series provides a broad coverage of discrete mathematics and optimization, ranging over such fields as combinatorics, graph theory, enumeration, mathematical programming and the analysis of algorithms, and including such topics as Ramsey theory, transversal theory, block designs, finite geometries, Polya theory, graph and matroid algorithms, network flows, polyhedral combinatorics and computational complexity. The Wiley - Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization will be a substantial part of the record of this extraordinary development. Recent titles in the Series: Search Problems Rudolf Ahlswede, University of Bielefeld, Federal Republic of Germany Ingo Wegener, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt, Federal Republic of Germany The problems of search, exploration, discovery and identification are of key importance in a wide variety of applications. This book will be of great interest to all those concerned with searching, sorting, information processing, design of experiments and optimal allocation of resources. 1987 Introduction to Optimization E. M. L. Beale FRS, Scicon Ltd, Milton Keynes, and Imperial College, LondonThis book is intended as an introduction to the many topics covered by the term ' optimization', with special emphasis on applications in industry. It is divided into three parts. The first part covers unconstrained optimization, the second describes the methods use

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,3, Bielefeld University, course: Moral Basis of Capitalism, 36 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: As Globalization and Neoliberalism are mentioned in public mass media, these terms are mainly afflicted with extensive critiques. Neoliberalism is implied an egoist, reckless transfer of Darwin's doctrine to Economy in which only the fittest can survive. This so called doctrine becomes more and more evident. Besides other definitions of Globalization I will refer to a 'general' definition which is sufficient as a required framework for this paper. I will define it as a term to 'describe the growth and spread in investment, trade, and production, the introduction of new technology, and the spread of democracy around the world.' (Schaeffer 2003: 1) The degree of Globalization 'would affect not only production, finance, technology, media and fashion, but also the international political system.' (Archibugi 2004: 438) The logic of the market has undoubtedly penetrated other subsystems of societies. In the overall concept of Globalization, Neoliberalism is the economic 'Ideology' which coins globalization. Neoliberalism is 'the' constitutive basis, the incentive of Globalization. Globalization explicitly implies the idea of worldwide free trade and global market economy. (Cp. Schäfer 2003: 36) 'At the end of the twentieth century, it looks clear that there has been a kind of triumph o global capitalism.' (Langhorne 2001: 16) This obvious development is frequently criticised all over the world dependent on sociocultural and structural background of critiques. In Africa targets of criticism are mainly international institutions like the IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organization or the Group of 8, banks and stock exchanges in the US, Canada and Europe. (Cp. Wood 2004: 69-75) This paper intends to elaborate Neoliberalism as the omnipotent market ideology and the inevitability of an evolutionary process. Outgoing from this thesis, neoliberalist-critics underestimate the importance of Global Governance as a concept of government on a global level. Instead, critics misguiding criticize the logic of a working system based on inequality. Hereafter this paper offers an appropriate concept of Global Governance which might be an opportunity to deal with apparent negative externalities in the global market system.
