Most of them became part of our everyday life like cars, planes and so on. These products consist of several components with high technological requirements to guarantee the quality of the final product. For example, the production of a high developed plane, as the Airbus A380, needs many special single components like turbines, wings, etc. These vital intermediate goods could either be purchased by foreign firms or be produced by the downstream assembler itself, respectively by an owned subunit. A view on the vertical structure among different downstream firms of different products shows that the share in purchased goods from foreign upstream firms varies widely. Since the components are very specifc, the number of upstream firms which produce one vital intermediate input is of course limited. In turn, the specific component could be purchased by less, mostly just one, consumer. A turbine manufactured for the A380, for instance, could not be used by another assembler than Airbus. A downstream firm is faced by deciding whether it should either integrate upstream units and become the owner of them or to sell some upstream firms, respectively let them stay independent, with respect to maximize its own profit. To provide an answer to the optimal behavior of an assembler, with respect to in- tegrate or to separate upstream units, I will use a model where the downstream firm is a monopolist in the final good market and needs a fixed number of vital intermediate inputs in fixed proportions to produce the final product. This model is relatively new and not being discussed by many authors. It was first examined in 2008 by Laussel. We will see that there exist two effects that influence the decision of the downstream firm. If the independent upstream suppliers have some positive bargaining power, they will sell their produced goods to a price above their costs. That causes the double marginalization effect, because the upstream firms do not account for the effect of its mark-up on the downstream firm. Furthermore an independent supplier, with a positive bargaining power, has a decreasing effect on the prices of the components supplied by the other independent upstream firms, because of the perfect complementary character of the intermediate goods. A high number of independent suppliers yields to relatively low input prices of the particular upstream firms.

Jörg Roche, who dedicated one chapter of his book Interkulturelle Sprachdidaktik: Eine Einführung to the role of intercultural language didactics in the teaching and learning of foreign languages, makes specific suggestions about restructuring the traditional concepts of foreign language lessons. According to him, the best learning success is achieved when intercultural learning and foreign language teaching are integrated. He explains conclusively that language and culture are inseparably bound to one another. Roche also warns not to use isolated or poorly researched pieces of cultural information, since this would lead to a falsified image of the target culture and prevent the learners from authentic language use. Roche's appeal illustrates the growing need of intercultural communication. Young pupils in Germany do not only live in a country that maintains contact with cultures all over the world, but they are also part of a multicultural society that is mirrored by the school classes. Foreign language lessons offer the opportunity to help them deal with it and prepare them for living in a multicultural society. After the introduction of English as a foreign language as an obligatory school subject in the classes 3 and 4 of the primary schools in 2003, it is now possible for the young learners in Germany to exhaust their enormous language learning potential more effectively. However, how they should be taught, and what exactly, is still discussed extensively. The new school subject made it necessary to develop a new curriculum and new school books, which were supposed to meet the needs of the young foreign language learners and the conditions of the guidelines. Considering the textbooks Bumblebee 3 and Bumblebee 4 (Schroedel 2003) as examples, this paper examines in how far the school books concur with the regulations concerning intercultural learning. Of course, school books do not solely represent what is taught in the lessons; the way the teachers uses them and what they teach additionally must also be regarded for that. Yet, the books play a central role in the lessons. Tasks, content and especially the illustrations have much influence on how the lessons are perceived by the pupils. Furthermore, the pupils can take the books home where they can work autonomously.

The University of Bielefeld is taken as one example, of how internationalisation can be implemented, what the key processes of internationalisation are and which steps should be taken to foster internationalisation in the future. The first part of this study is having a look at what internationalisation of universities is and how the idea has developed historically. he paper then in the second part describes the main stakeholders and their role in the internationalisation of higher education. In part three and four the key drivers of internationalisation for universities in general and German institutions of higher education in particular are identified. Therefore this paper outlines first the general global trends in higher education in part three and than focuses on specific German and European developments in part four. Special attention will be drawn on the legal changes in the German system of higher education and the EU-harmonisation process. In Chapter five the competitive forces like new market entrants and substitutes will be looked at. The sixth part will describe the specific motivation for internationalisation at the UoB and sketch the environmental situation of the university like the history of the institution, geographical aspects, its profile etc. It then focuses on strategy formulated so far. Parts seven and eight examine the internationalisation efforts on the side of resource allocation and international programmes. The last chapter tries to summarize the strengths and weaknesses of the internationalisation process at the UoB and to derive recommendations for a coherent future strategy of internationalisation. This part is opening perspectives for chances, but also tries to focus on the dangers for the UoB. Therefore in the preceding parts the internationalisation efforts and its effects will be analysed and compared to developments at other universities focussing especially on other universities in North Rhine Westphalia (NRW), but also worldwide.
