Devoted to information security, this volume begins with a short course on cryptography, mainly based on lectures given by Rudolf Ahlswede at the University of Bielefeld in the mid 1990s. It was the second of his cycle of lectures on information theory which opened with an introductory course on basic coding theorems, as covered in Volume 1 of this series. In this third volume, Shannon’s historical work on secrecy systems is detailed, followed by an introduction to an information-theoretic model of wiretap channels, and such important concepts as homophonic coding and authentication. Once the theoretical arguments have been presented, comprehensive technical details of AES are given. Furthermore, a short introduction to the history of public-key cryptology, RSA and El Gamal cryptosystems is provided, followed by a look at the basic theory of elliptic curves, and algorithms for efficient addition in elliptic curves. Lastly, the important topic of “oblivious transfer” is discussed, which is strongly connected to the privacy problem in communication. Today, the importance of this problem is rapidly increasing, and further research and practical realizations are greatly anticipated. This is the third of several volumes serving as the collected documentation of Rudolf Ahlswede’s lectures on information theory. Each volume includes comments from an invited well-known expert. In the supplement to the present volume, Rüdiger Reischuk contributes his insights. Classical information processing concerns the main tasks of gaining knowledge and the storage, transmission and hiding of data. The first task is the prime goal of Statistics. For transmission and hiding data, Shannon developed an impressive mathematical theory called Information Theory, which he based on probabilistic models. The theory largely involves the concept of codes with small error probabilities in spite of noise in the transmission, which is modeled by channels. The lectures presented in this work are suitable for graduate students in Mathematics, and also for those working in Theoretical Computer Science, Physics, and Electrical Engineering with a background in basic Mathematics. The lectures can be used as the basis for courses or to supplement courses in many ways. Ph.D. students will also find research problems, often with conjectures, that offer potential subjects for a thesis. More advanced researchers may find questions which form the basis of entire research programs.

Jörg Enderleins studied physics at the Mechnikov University in Odessa (Ukraine) from 1981 until 1986, and defended his PhD thesis about non-linear reaction diffusion system at Humboldt University in berlin (Germany) in 1991. From 1991 until 1996 he was scientific co-worker of PicoQuant GmbH, where he was involved in the development of advanced single-photon counting technology for single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy. From 1996 until 1997, he joined the group of Richard A. Keller in Los Alamos (USA) as a guest scientist, and in 1997 became an assistant professor at the University of Regensburg (Germany), where he defended his habilitation in 2000. From 2001 until 2006, he was as Heisenberg Fellow of the German Research Council (DFG) and established his research group at the Insitut for Biological Information processing 1 at the Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany). His main research topic is the development of new single-molecule spectroscopic techniques for biophysics applications. Johan Hofkens, born in Hoogstraten, Belgium, in 1966 received his master in Chemistry from KUleuven in 1988, which was followed by a PhD in Sciences from KULeuven in 1993. After postdoctoral research with professor Masuahara at Osaka University and Professor Barbara at the University of Minneapolis, he rejoined the KULeuven were he was in charge of the single molecule unit in the group of Prof De Schryver. In 2005 he was appointed research professor at the KULeuven. His research interests are fast spectroscopy, single molecule spectroscopy and optics. Markus Sauer was born 1965 in Pforzheim. He studied chemistry in Karlsruhe, Saarbrücken, and Heidelberg, and finished his PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of Heidelberg in 1995 under the guidance of Prof. Jürgen Wolfrum. After a short-term visit at LBNL, Berkeley in the group of Prof. Shimon Weiss, he was decorated with the BioFuture award in 1998 to perform independent research on single-molecule handling, detection, and identification. 2002 he finished his habilitation in Heidelberg at the Institute of Physical Chemistry. Since 2003 he is Professor for Applied Laser Physics and Laser Spectroscopy at the University in Bielefeld. His research interests cover the development of new electron transfer sensors and probes as well as new single-molecule sensitive fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. Kenneth Weston was born and grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After receiving a BS degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1994, he went on to earn a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998 where he worked with Prof. Steve Buratto. Kenneth spent two years working with Dr. Lori Goldner at The National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate. In 2001, Kenneth joined to group of Dr. Markus Sauer at the Physical Chemistry Institute at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. From 2002-2005, Kenneth was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University. Kenneth's research has focused on the development of various new methods and applications of optical spectroscopy and microscopy, fluctuation correlation spectroscopy, and microfluidics. Kenneth is now a senior scientist with Directed Energy Solutions in Colorado Springs and is part of a team that is developing very high power infrared lasers.

There are different authors like Wolfgang Hohlbein taking up this topic in German literature as well. The short stories 'Rip van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' which were published in 1820, experienced their renaissance in cinema over the past few years. In 1999 the American director Tim Burton, known for his interest in fantastic stories, used 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' as a model for his movie simply called Sleepy Hollow. For this term paper it is necessary to take a look at Washington Irving as a romantic writer to understand his works in a wider context. Irving combined European and American aspects of romanticism. The political situation of the U.S.A. around 1800 is also important, because in his works Irving refers to it again and again. He tried to resolve the American identity crisis through his fiction. Furthermore I would like to examine closely what is supernatural about the stories mentioned and I will compare the supernatural elements of the stories. I would like to find out, if there is any difference in Washington Irving's use of the supernatural elements and in which way these possible differences influence the plots of the stories. Before that is possible, at first the phenomenon of 'The Supernatural' has to be defined and the differences between similar phenomena like 'The Fantastic' and 'The Miraculous' have to be pointed out carefully. Chapter four serves this purpose. The knowledge about 'The Supernatural' can then be transferred on the analysis and the comparison in chapters five and six.
