[Sarepta's Daughters. The Life of Deaconesses between Self-Denial and Self-Assertion] The work of deaconesses in hospitals and parishes in the 19th and the first half oft he 20th century realized important functions of care and are an essential part of church history. In 1869 in Bielefeld/Westfalia the Westfalian Deaconess Institution - called Sarepta - was founded, which had been one of the largest in Germany. There is nearly no research about the concrete life and work of deaconesses. Ute Gause shows the life of three women of Sarepta with the help of archive material - the first head Emilie Heuser (1820-1898), a district nurse, Anna Siebel (1874-1975), and the reformer Liese Hoefer (1920-2009), a PhD Psychologist, who wanted to change the institution, - thus showing a lifely picture of an institution largely supported and designed by women.

Computer Vision Systems

In the past few years, with the advances in microelectronics and digital te- nology, cameras became a widespread media. This, along with the enduring increase in computing power boosted the development of computer vision s- tems. The International Conference on Computer Vision Systems (ICVS) covers the advances in this area. This is to say that ICVS is not and should not be yet another computer vision conference. The ?eld of computer vision is fully covered by many well-established and famous conferences and ICVS di?ers from these by covering the systems point of view. ICVS 2008 was the 6th International Conference dedicated to advanced research on computer vision systems. The conference, continuing a series of successful events in Las Palmas, Vancouver, Graz, New York and Bielefeld, in 2008 was held on Santorini. In all, 128 papers entered the review process and each was reviewed by three independent reviewers using the double-blind review method. Of these, 53 - pers were accepted (23 as oral and 30 as poster presentation). There were also two invited talks by P. Anandan and by Heinrich H. Bultho ¨ ?. The presented papers cover all aspects of computer vision systems, namely: cognitive vision, monitor and surveillance, computer vision architectures, calibration and reg- tration, object recognition and tracking, learning, human—machine interaction and cross-modal systems.

Observing and Developing Play Skills in Childre...

Play skills are important in children's general development. Because the lack of visual information affects all aspects of development in the early years, children with blindness or visual impairment adopt play styles that are different from their sighted peers of the same age. children's general developmental was assessed using the Bielefeld Observation Scale-Blind Scale (BOS-Blind). Play behaviors were filmed then rated using the Play Development Scale for Blind and visually impaired children (PDS-BL) during the three months of the intervention program. Parents of the participants filled a questionnaire during the weekly home visits, recording their child's play behaviors, play materials, and the involvements of adults or siblings during play time between the sessions. Parents also wrote in a logbook their comments and concerns about their children with visual impairments and the effects on their lives.

The 4th IAPR TC3 Workshop on Arti?cial Neural Networks in Pattern Rec- nition, ANNPR 2010, was held at Nile University (Egypt), April 11 13, 2010. The workshop was organized by the Technical Committee on Neural Networks and Computational Intelligence (TC3) that is one of the 20 technical comm- tees (TC) of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). The scope of TC3 includes computational intelligence approaches, such as fuzzy s- tems, evolutionary computing and arti?cial neural networks and their use in various pattern recognition applications. The major topics of ANNPR are supervised and unsupervised learning, f- ture selection, pattern recognition in signal and image processing, and appli- tions in data mining or bioinformatics. High quality across such a diverse ?eld of research is achieved through a rigorous and selective review process. For this workshop, 42 papers were submitted and 23 of them were selected for inc- sion in the proceedings. The workshop was enriched by three invited talks given by Barbara Hammer, University of Bielefeld, Germany, Amir F. Atiya, Cairo University, Egypt, and Mohamed Kamel, University of Waterloo, Canada. We would like to thank all authors for the e?ort they put into their subm- sions, and the Scienti?c Committee for taking the time to provide high-quality reviews and selecting the best contributions for the ?nal workshop program. Special thanks are due to the members of the Nile University Organizing C- mittee,AhmedSalah,AmiraElBaroudy,EsraaAly,HebaEzzat,NesrineSameh, Rana Salah and Mohamed Zahhar for their indispensable contributions to the registration management and local organization.

The Genres, Prosody and Pragmatics of Rap

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,1 , Bielefeld University, language: English, abstract: Preliminaries The first song whose rhythmic style of singing predates rapping was already published in the 1920s. About 50 years later, the first historically known rap song was published. Since then, this genre has undergone many changes and has been examined from diverse angles. Various cultural, historical and language-centered studies have been conducted on rap music. There is, however, little research particularly concerned with the different musical categories of rap, vocal deliveries of rap and the usage and understanding of language in contexts of rap from a pragmatical point of view. To investigate some of the genres linguistic properties, the main focus of this paper will be on the genres, prosody and pragmatics of rap music. The paper is divided into five chapters and three major parts. After the introduction and some general thoughts about the history of rap music, the first major part deals with the generic classification of this genre in chapter three. A general overview of the different genres of rap is given here by focusing on their musical, thematic and vocal style variations. It will be explored whether genres of rap are related to each other, overlap and whether each genre encompasses a different style of vocal delivery. All the lyrics of the songs which will be mentioned and discussed in this thesis are available in the appendix accompanied by a CD of songs and files. Taking into account the different vocal styles, which will be mentioned in chapter three, in chapter four, particular focus will be drawn to the prosodic variations of vocal styles, especially to stress. In this respect, an experiment has been conducted by which prosodic differences of vocal styles will be discussed in chapter four. It is not the objective of this
